Why does the Church exist?

As pastors of small churches, it's essential to have a clear understanding of why the church exists. The Bible provides us with a comprehensive explanation of the purpose and function of the church. In this post, we will explore what the Bible says about why the church exists and how it can impact our ministry as pastors.

  1. The church exists to glorify God

First and foremost, the Bible tells us that the church exists to glorify God. In Ephesians 3:21, Paul states that "to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen." The church exists to bring glory and honor to God through worship, service, and obedience to His commands.

  1. The church exists to make disciples

The church also exists to make disciples of all nations. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commands His disciples to "go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." The church exists to proclaim the good news of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and to make disciples who will follow Him.

  1. The church exists to build up believers

Another purpose of the church is to build up believers and to help them grow in their faith. In Ephesians 4:11-13, Paul writes that Christ gave gifts to the church, including apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, "to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ." The church exists to equip believers for ministry and to help them grow in their relationship with Christ.

  1. The church exists to serve others

Finally, the church exists to serve others and to be a witness to the world. In James 1:27, we are called to "visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." The church exists to show love and compassion to those in need, to share the good news of salvation, and to be a light in the world.

The Bible tells us that the church exists to glorify God, to make disciples, to build up believers, and to serve others. As pastors of small churches, it's essential to understand the purpose and function of the church so that we can lead and serve our congregations effectively. By understanding why the church exists, we can work towards fulfilling its mission and impacting our communities for Christ.
