Stay in the Fight: An Encouragement for Pastors
Pastor,
I know that the weight of ministry can feel heavy at times. You have been called to shepherd a small flock, and at times, that can feel isolating. Perhaps you're facing challenges that no one else seems to understand. Maybe you're discouraged by the slow pace of growth, or maybe you're feeling weary from all the demands that never seem to end. But I want you to hear this—God sees you, and He has called you to this work for a reason. The calling on your life is significant, and the work you are doing is not in vain.
This post is for you. It's a reminder that you are not alone in this journey, and the God who called you will equip you and sustain you. I want to encourage you—spiritually, practically, and personally—to keep fighting the good fight. You are making an eternal difference. Don’t grow weary in well-doing, and don't give up. Keep pressing forward with the hope and strength that comes only from God.
1. God Knows You Are Faithful, Even in the Small Things
In Zechariah 4:10 (NIV), we are reminded: “Who dares despise the day of small things?” It’s easy to become disheartened when you’re not seeing the big results you expected. But God values the small things—the quiet moments of prayer, the one person you discipled, the faithful few who show up every Sunday. These are not small things to God.
Every act of obedience, every sermon you preach, every prayer you lift up matters in the kingdom of God. Jesus spoke of the faithfulness in small things when He said in Luke 16:10 (NIV), “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” You are proving your faithfulness, and in time, God will entrust you with more. Your ministry is significant, and God is faithful to honor your efforts, even when they seem unnoticed.
Take a moment to reflect on all the small victories in your ministry. Maybe you saw one person come to faith this year, or perhaps someone finally overcame a personal struggle. Celebrate these wins! Keep a journal of these moments of encouragement so that when the tough days come, you can look back and see how far God has brought you.
2. God Is Using You, Even When You Can’t See It
It’s easy to assume that your ministry's success is measured by visible growth—more people in the pews, more volunteers, bigger budgets—but that’s not God’s economy. The apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 3:7 (NIV), “So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” It’s not your efforts alone that bring growth. It’s God’s hand at work in the hearts of those you minister to.
Your influence may be more far-reaching than you realize. Seeds are being planted in ways that might not show up for months or even years. People are being impacted by your sermons, your care, and your commitment to the Lord. One day, you’ll see the fruit of your labor, and I promise you, it will be abundant.
Take comfort in knowing that God is always at work, even when you can’t see the results immediately. Trust in His timing, and lean on His sovereignty. Your ministry is doing more than you can imagine—because it is His work, not just yours.
3. You Are Not Alone in This
The enemy will often whisper lies to you—"You’re alone." "No one understands." "Why are you even doing this?" But these lies couldn’t be further from the truth. Hebrews 13:5 (NIV) assures us, “God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” You are never alone.
Additionally, while it might feel isolating at times, you are part of a vast community of pastors around the world who are walking the same road. Small churches are the backbone of the global Church, and the Church is God's Plan 'A'. As you labor in your ministry, you are connected to thousands of faithful pastors who are pouring out their lives for the same mission—to glorify God and to make disciples.
Reach out to a fellow pastor this week. You may feel like you're walking this road alone, but there is strength in shared experiences. Connecting with others in similar situations can renew your energy, provide a safe place for prayer and support, and remind you that you are part of something bigger.
4. Your Work Has Eternal Value
In a world obsessed with immediate results, it’s important to remember that the work you’re doing in your small church has eternal consequences. 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NIV) says, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” What you are doing is making an eternal difference.
Every conversation, every act of service, every prayer, every sermon—it all matters. Even when you don’t see the results immediately, God is at work, and He will bring fruit in His time.
As you work each day, keep your eyes focused on eternity. You are laying treasures up in heaven with every act of service. Your ministry is an investment in the kingdom of God, and no act of service to the Lord is ever wasted.
5. Press On with the Strength God Provides
Ministry can be draining. The demands are constant, and sometimes the results are slow. But Galatians 6:9 (NIV) encourages us: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Keep your eyes on the prize. The harvest is coming.
God gives us the strength to endure and the perseverance to continue. Remember that He has called you to this work, and He has equipped you for the task at hand. No matter how tough the journey may seem, God’s grace will sustain you.
Consider taking regular breaks for self-care and reflection. Keep a routine that includes prayer, rest, and time for your own spiritual growth. A pastor who thrives spiritually will lead more effectively. Lean on God’s strength daily, and remember, He has promised to renew your strength, just as He renews the eagle’s wings (Isaiah 40:31).
Stay in the Fight
Pastor, your work is incredibly valuable. Even when you feel weary or unnoticed, God sees you and is using you in ways that you cannot always see. Keep pressing on. Keep preaching the Word. Keep caring for your congregation. Don’t grow weary in doing good. You are not alone, and your labor is not in vain.
Stay encouraged, stay faithful, and keep your eyes on Jesus, who is the ultimate reward and the source of your strength. God has called you to this work, and He will be faithful to sustain you.
