Week 2: Continuing the Journey of Advent: Joy and Love

Advent Theme - Joy

“I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” Luke 2:10 (NIV)

Joy is the third theme of Advent, and it’s one of the most powerful aspects of the Christmas story. The announcement of Jesus' birth to the shepherds was a declaration of joy for all people. In a world often marked by sorrow, Jesus' arrival brought a deep, unshakable joy—a joy that transcends circumstances and fills the hearts of believers.

For small church pastors, joy can sometimes feel elusive in the face of struggles and challenges. Yet, Advent calls us to rejoice, not in the absence of difficulties, but in the presence of Christ. His coming brings a joy that is both personal and communal, and it is to be shared with others.

Celebrating Joy:

  • Light the third Advent candle (the Joy candle) and invite your congregation to reflect on the joy that Christ brings into their lives.
  • Preach about the joy found in Christ and encourage your congregation to share that joy with others through acts of kindness and service.

Advent Theme - Love

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.” – 1 John 3:16 (NIV)

The final theme of Advent is Love, the ultimate gift that Jesus brings. The Bible tells us that God is love, and the greatest act of love was demonstrated in the coming of Jesus to the world. His love is self-sacrificial, unconditional, and transformative. As pastors, we are called to reflect this love, not just in our teachings, but also in our actions toward others.

Love is the essence of the Christmas story—the birth of Christ is God's gift of love to the world, and we are called to reciprocate that love by loving others. For small church pastors, Advent provides an opportunity to guide the congregation in expressing this love, whether through outreach, generosity, or service to the community.

Celebrating Love:

  • Light the fourth Advent candle (the Love candle) and encourage your congregation to reflect on the love that Christ showed by coming into the world for their salvation.
  • Focus your Advent sermon on the love of God and how it calls us to love others in practical ways.

God's love came down to earth in the form of a vulnerable child—an act that would ultimately lead to the sacrificial love of the cross. This love transforms everything.

Advent is a season of preparation, reflection, and anticipation. As pastors, we have the privilege of guiding our congregations through this powerful journey of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. Each of these themes reminds us of the arrival of Jesus and our continued longing for His return. Through lighting the Advent candles, reflecting on Scripture, and incorporating traditions, we can keep the focus on Christ and the deep meaning of His birth. May this season of Advent be one of deep reflection, renewed hope, and joyful anticipation for all that Christ has done and will do.
